About the Recipe
Ingredients
1 teaspoon kosher salt (sub: ½ tsp table salt)
1 teaspoon ground black pepper
1 teaspoon dried, cracked fennel seed
2 teaspoons dried sage
1 teaspoon dried thyme (sub: Italian seasoning)
1 teaspoon ground black pepper
½ teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon ground white pepper (optional)
¼ teaspoon cayenne powder (optional)
1 pound ground beef (Pre Brands is my fave!)
¼ cup flour
3 cups milk
8 biscuits (canned or scratch, optional)
Garnish: Fried sage leaves
Preparation
Step 1
Measure and mix all seasonings together and set aside.
Step 2
Brown ground beef over medium-high heat in a large skillet or Dutch oven, 8-10 minutes.
Step 3
Add seasoning blend and stir to distribute and toast spices 1-2 minutes.
Step 4
Reduce heat to medium-low and sprinkle flour over the beef. Stir to toast for 1 minute.
Step 5
Add milk in ½-1 cup increments and simmer, stirring constantly, until thickened, 2-5 minutes. Add more milk, as needed, to desired consistency. Serve with fresh biscuits.
Step 6
To create a Biscuits & Gravy Skillet, complete gravy through step five and top with raw biscuits. Place in a 425° oven, and bake until biscuits are toasty brown and baked throughout - appx 12-15 minutes.
